42 JU students freed from jail

A Dhaka court on Sunday granted bail to 42 students of Jahangirnagar University after they were produced before it in regard with a vandalism case.

The court of additional chief judicial magistrate Mostafizur Rahman gave them bail after their lawyer moved separate petitions begging bail in the case.

The students were held by law enforcers while protesting death of their two fellows in a road accident on Friday.

The university registrar Abu Bakkar lodged the case with Ashulia Police Station on Sunday against 50 people mentioning names of 30 accused, bringing allegation that the students have performed vandalism on the campus during the agitation.

Earlier on the day, the resident students of the university left their halls after the authorities ordered them to vacate halls by around 10:00am.

The university authorities took the decision at an emergency syndicate meeting called by university vice-chancellor Farzana Islam on Saturday night after students took position inside her residence compound by breaking the lock of the front gate.
