National Committee places alternative master plan for power plant

Referring the government’s Power Sector Master Plan 2016 costly, import-oriented and destructive to environment, the main leaders of the National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resource, Power and Ports on Saturday presented an alternative draft master plan highlighting on renewable power generation system.

Addressing a press conference at National Press Club, member secretary of the committee Anu Muhammad said that cost-effective and renewable energy-based power generation capacity of the country could be increased at 91,700MW in three phases by 2041 if the government adopted the committee’s plan.

The government is implementing the costly power plant projects to make the country highly dependent on import-based power generation as part of serving interests of vested groups, he said.

‘If the committee’s draft master plan was adopted, real price of electricity could be reduced at Tk 5.10 per unit by 2041, Tk 7.69 lower than the government’s estimation by its own plan,’ Anu said.

Left politicians Mujahidul Islam Selim, Tipu Biswas, Mushrefa Mishu, Saiful Huq, Zonayed Saki, Abdul Hasib Chowdhury and Mahbub Sumon, among others addressed the press conference.
